• Elon Reeve Musk FRS (born June 28, 1971) is an entrepreneur and business magnate.
He is the founder, CEO, and Chief Engineer at SpaceX; early stage investor, CEO, and Product Architect of Tesla, Inc.; founder of The Boring Company; and co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI.
A centibillionaire, Musk is one of the richest people in the world. ... Musk was born to a Canadian mother and South African father and raised in Pretoria, South Africa.
He briefly attended the University of Pretoria before moving to Canada aged 17 to attend Queen's University.
He transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he received bachelor's degrees in economics and physics.
He moved to California in 1995 to attend Stanford University but decided instead to pursue a business career, co-founding the web software company Zip2 with brother Kimbal.
The startup was acquired by Compaq for $307 million in 1999.
Musk co-founded online bank X.com that same year, which merged with Confinity in 2000 to form PayPal.
The company was bought by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion.
In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company, of which he is CEO and CTO.
In 2004, he joined electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors, Inc.
(now Tesla, Inc.) as chairman and product architect, becoming its CEO in 2008.
In 2006, he helped create SolarCity, a solar energy services company that was later acquired by Tesla and became Tesla Energy.
In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI, a nonprofit research company that promotes friendly artificial intelligence.
In 2016, he co-founded Neuralink, a nEurotechnology company focused on developing brain-computer interfaces, and founded The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company.
Musk has proposed the Hyperloop, a high-speed vactrain transportation system.
Musk has been the subject of criticism due to unorthodox or unscientific stances and highly publicized controversies.
In 2018, he was sued for defamation by a British caver who advised in the Tham Luang cave rescue; a California jury ruled in favor of Musk.
In the same year, he was sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for falsely tweeting that he had secured funding for a private takeover of Tesla.
He settled with the SEC, temporarily stepping down from his chairmanship and accepting limitations on his Twitter usage.
Musk has spread misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic and has received criticism from experts for his other views on such matters as artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and public transport. ... WEALTH.
Musk made $165 million when PayPal was sold to eBay in 2002.
He was first listed on the Forbes Billionaires List in 2012, with a net worth of $2 billion.
At the start of 2020, Musk had a net worth of $27 billion.
Throughout that year, his net worth increased by $150 billion, largely driven by his ownership of around 20% of Tesla stock.
During this, Musk's net worth was often volatile.
For example, it dropped $16.3 billion in September, the largest single-day plunge in the history of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
In November of that year, Musk passed Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg to become the third-richest person in the world; a week later he passed Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates to become the second-richest.
In January 2021, Musk, with a net worth of $185 billion, surpassed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to become the richest person in the world.
Bezos reclaimed the top spot the following month.
Around three-quarters of Musk's wealth derives from Tesla.
Musk does not receive a salary from Tesla; he agreed in 2018 to a compensation plan with the board that ties his personal earnings to Tesla's valuation and revenue.
The deal stipulated that Musk only receives the compensation if Tesla reaches certain market values.
It was the largest such deal ever done between a CEO and board.
In the first award, given in May 2020, he was eligible to purchase 1.69 million TSLA shares (about 1% of the company) at below-market prices, which was worth about $800 million.
Musk has repeatedly described himself as "cash poor," and has "professed to have little interest in the material trappings of wealth." In 2012, Musk signed The Giving Pledge and, in May 2020, Musk pledged to "sell almost all physical possessions." In 2021, Musk defended his wealth by saying he is "accumulating resources to help make life multiplanetary and extend the light of consciousness to the stars." He owns a private jet.
The jet's heavy use of fossil fuels - it flew over 150,000 miles in 2018 - has received criticism.
According to ProPublica, Musk paid no federal income taxes in 2018. ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk

• (2023-03-07, https://newrepublic.com/post/171028/elon-musk-hops-aboard-tucker-carlson-january-6-conspiracy-train) "Elon Musk Hops Aboard the Tucker Carlson January 6 Conspiracy Train.
The billionaire CEO is going further down the rabbit hole." Aside from not attending to the website Elon Musk owned after most of its basic functionality failed - and conducting a lawyer-heart-attack-inducing layoff of a disabled person via tweet - Elon Musk has spent most of the past day sharing Tucker Carlson-inspired conspiracies about 2021-01-06.
Spurred by Tucker Carlson's exclusive blaring of footage of the January 6 attack, Elon Musk maintained incredulity throughout the last 24 hours, tweet after tweet showing in real-time the supposedly political enigma going further and further down the rabbit hole.
"Wow," Musk tweeted in response to a tweet of a clip from Tucker Carlson's show in which Tucker Carlson casts doubt surrounding the death of Brian Sicknick, an officer who died hours after defending the Capitol from the rioters.
Elon Musk then retweeted a New York Post article about footage showing Brian Sicknick appearing "uninjured." Elon Musk then complained about the January 6 committee for "misleading the public," and withholding evidence for "partisan political reasons that sent people to prison for far more serious crimes than they committed." "I keep forgetting which party he belongs to," Elon Musk quipped in response to Charlie Kirk tweeting a video of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell criticizing Tucker Carlson and Fox News for the 2021-01-06 conspiracy-peddling.
Elon Musk - the billionaire whose companies are under constant legal scrutiny for faults like destructive self-driving cars, who happily welcomed virulent antisemites and stochastic terrorists like Nick Fuentes back to Twitter, and has allegedly paid off a sexual harassment alleger $250,000 for her silence - called the committee's attempts to hold domestic terrorists accountable "deeply wrong, legally and morally." Not for nothing, on Tuesday (2023-03-07), Elon Musk also responded to "@MuskUniversity," who tweeted a supposed quote of Elon Musk saying "Many go woke for the moral cloak." "So many guys who got MeToo'ed went woke for the moral cloak," Elon Musk propounded.
Apparently $250,000 can keep the moral cloak at bay.
• (2023-03-07, https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/musk-twitter-fired-worker-apology-1.6771404) "Elon Musk apologizes after mocking, questioning disability of Twitter employee who wanted to know job status.
Haraldur Thorleifsson tweeted at social media giant's CEO after finding himself unable to log in for work." ... Haraldur Thorleifsson - who until recently was employed at Twitter - logged in to his computer last Sunday (2023-03-05) to do some work - only to find himself locked out, along with 200 others.
Haraldur Thorleifsson might have figured - as others before him have in the chaotic months of layoffs and firings since Elon Musk took over the company - that he was out of a job.
Instead, after nine days of no answer from Twitter as to whether or not he (Haraldur Thorleifsson) was still employed, Haraldur Thorleifsson decided to tweet at Elon Musk to see if he could catch the billionaire's attention and get an answer to his Schrodinger's job situation.
"Your head of HR is not able to confirm if I am employed or not," he wrote on Monday (2023-03-06).
"Maybe if enough people retweet you'll answer me here?" Eventually, Haraldur Thorleifsson got his answer after a surreal Twitter exchange with Elon Musk, who proceeded to quiz Haraldur Thorleifsson about his work and question Haraldur Thorleifsson's disability and need for accommodations.
Haraldur Thorleifsson - who goes by "Halli" - has muscular dystrophy, and uses a wheelchair.
Elon Musk went on to tweet that Haraldur Thorleifsson has a "prominent, active Twitter account and is wealthy" noting that the "reason he confronted me in public was to get a big payout." While the exchange was going on, Haraldur Thorleifsson said he received an email telling him that he was no longer employed at Twitter.
Late Tuesday afternoon (2023-03-07), however, Elon Musk had a change of heart.
ELON MUSK APOLOGIZES FOR "MISUNDERSTANDING." "I would like to apologize to Halli (Haraldur Thorleifsson) for my misunderstanding of his situation.
It was based on things I was told that were untrue or, in some cases, true, but not meaningful," Elon Musk tweeted.
"He is considering remaining at Twitter." Haraldur Thorleifsson did not immediately respond to a message for comment following Elon Musk's tweet.
In an earlier email, Haraldur Thorleifsson called the experience "surreal." ...

• (2023-04-08, https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2023/04/elon-musk-twitter-npr-state-affiliated-label-emails/) "Does Elon Musk Know What He's Even Doing?" There are plenty of data points you could plot on the "Does Elon Musk Have Any Idea What Is Going On?" chart.
Here's a quick and incomplete primer featuring Elon Musk's most ludicrous actions since Elon Musk bought Twitter and took over as CEO at the end of 2022-10.
{ • Lifting a conspiracy theory about Paul Pelosi from fake local news site and tweeting it to Elon Musk's 130 million-plus followers.
• Suspending journalists for posting publicly accessible information revealing the locations of climate-careless multimillionaires and their private jets.
• Possibly lying about agreeing to step down as the CEO if Twitter users voted for him to do so during a Twitter poll Elon Musk conducted.
• Bringing in a sink into Twitter HQ as a Le Epic bit.
• Making the Twitter logo the "Doge dog" for a few days, amid a $258 billion class-action federal lawsuit accusing him of manipulating the cryptocurrency, also as a Le Epic bit. }.Now, Elon Musk's labeling of National Public Radio as "State-Affiliated Media" on Twitter last Tuesday might be vying for a prime placement on our chart.
Typically, this label is reserved for outlets that receive substantial funding and direction from governments like Russia's RT or China's The People's Daily.
NPR, the nonprofit media outlet based in Washington, D.C., gets less than one percent of its annual budget from federal funding.
Does that make Twitter - a company in which Saudi royalty owns a 4 percent stake - Saudi Arabian-affiliated media?
NPR also receives no direction or even indirect oversight from any government, another condition in Twitter's definition of state-affiliated media.
Elon Musk evidently didn't know about NPR's funding mix until it was flagged in an email from NPR's own tech reporter, Bobby Allyn.
"Well, then we should fix it," Elon Musk wrote back on Wednesday (2023-04-05).
From Allyn's own reporting on the correspondence, it appears that Elon Musk made a sweeping and consequential decision about labeling without doing any real research.
"Elon Musk appeared to be unclear about the difference between public media and state-controlled media," Allyn wrote.
As of this afternoon (2023-04-08) NPR's Twitter page is now affixed with a label that reads "Government Funded", a change that appeared to happen while writing this post.
Which can only lead us to a simple conclusion: Elon Musk has no idea what he's doing.
The CEO of Twitter is turning in inept, intern-level homework for extremely high-profile decisions.
To be clear, I'm not trying to absolve Elon Musk by making excuses for him.
Elon Musk isn't completely clueless (he knows how to use Google), and if he is, it's not because he's dumb; it's probably because he doesn't want to understand.
Why would he?
Elon Musk has $187 billion.
In the U.S., with that much money, unless you do something really bad (felony bad), there are no consequences.
And even then ...
• (2023-05-10, https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2023/05/elon-musk-tucker-carlson/) "Did Elon Musk Unleash Racist Dog Whistles to Woo Tucker Carlson?
As Tucker Carlson makes his broadcast debut on Twitter, the disgraced Fox News host Tucker Carlson should feel right at home." Elon Musk got on his own website on Saturday (2023-05-06) and started dog-whistle posting.
In a series of reply tweets, Elon Musk highlighted for his millions of followers thinly veiled racist tweets about Black people doing crime against white people, thereby boosting them in Twitter's algorithm.
Then on Sunday (2023-05-07), Axios reported that Elon Musk had spoken with the recently fired Fox News host Tucker Carlson about potentially taking his act to Twitter.
On Tuesday (2023-05-09) Tucker Carlson confirmed that he would soon launch a version of his show on Elon Musk's platform, Twitter.
One could reasonably wonder whether these things are related.
Let's discuss: First, consider the tweets in question.
In replying to a tweet sharing a misleading graphic suggesting the media focuses nearly exclusively on white-on-Black crime, Elon Musk wrote: "Odd, why would the media misrepresent the real situation to such an extreme degree?" (The graphic gives a supposed, and much higher, number for Black-on-white crime.) But the image has serious problems, and elides the truth.
For more on that, here is Judd Legum writing in his Popular Information newsletter (2023-05-09, https://popular.info/p/elon-musks-obsession-with-anti-white): "One major issue with the chart, which has been circulated online for years by racists since it first appeared in The Blaze in 2019, is that it excludes "White on White" and "Black on Black" crime.
Crimes by whites against other whites are by far the most common type of crime in the United States." Knack - a Belgian media site - debunked the image in 2020 (2020-06-08, https://www.knack.be/factcheck/factcheck-deze-grafiek-geeft-een-misleidend-beeld-van-geweld-in-de-vs/).
Knack also created its own version of the chart, which includes crimes where the perpetrator and victim are the same race.
The regraphed data paint a far different picture.
Elon Musk also responded with "interesting" to a tweet that reads, "Blacks kill each other.
Whites kill themselves." Elon Musk also replied to several tweets about cases of Black people killing white people that supposedly went ignored, but which were actually reported by local and national media.
White people harping on Black crime has long been the loudest of dog whistles.
(In politics, a dog whistle is the use of coded or suggestive language in political messaging to garner support from a particular group without provoking opposition.
• https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_whistle_(politics) .).
A Richard Nixon campaign aide admitted in a 22-year-old interview - which Harper's Magazine published in 2016 (2016-04-01, https://harpers.org/archive/2016/04/legalize-it-all/) - that the War on Drugs was designed to harness anti-black racial animus without doing so directly.
George H.W. Bush infamously tried a similar ploy with his ads about Willie Horton - a Black prisoner released on a furlough program who raped a white woman and stabbed her boyfriend.
More recently, who can forget that Breitbart News had a tab for "Black Crime"?
While baldly deploying the message of "look at who is doing all of this crime" has gotten dicier, it's still a favored tactic of contemporary white nationalists like Nick Fuentes and his friends, so Elon Musk is in superb company.
Elon Musk, who has tweeted out a series of increasingly far-right, regressive things, doesn't normally broach white nationalist territory.
Which raises the question: Was Elon Musk doing so related to wooing Tucker Carlson to set up shop on Elon Musk's struggling platform, Twitter?
It might not have been a bad strategy.
After all, Tucker Carlson is notorious for - among other things - being a hero to white supremacists and the far right, and serving as their bridge to the mainstream.
(Tucker Carlson talks like this too: as recently as 2022, Tucker Carlson blamed "African American males" for the spike in crime rates.) Tucker Carlson was reportedly fired after Fox News board members grew alarmed about a text diatribe in which Tucker Carlson cited a video of Donald Trump supporters beating up "an Antifa kid" and wrote: "It's not how white men fight." Maybe Elon Musk's misrepresentation of the race-and-crime statistics was a ham-fisted overture to Tucker Carlson to say, "I've got your back." Or maybe Elon Musk is simply racist.
• (2023-06-02, https://newrepublic.com/post/173184/elon-musk-personally-elevates-transphobic-video-originally-flagged-hate-speech) "Elon Musk Personally Elevates Transphobic Video Originally Flagged as Hate Speech.
"Every parent should watch this," said the man (Elon Musk) disowned by his trans daughter." "Every parent should watch this." This is what Elon Musk - one of the world's most powerful elites - said about The Daily Wire's transphobic documentary "What Is a Woman?" hosted by the vicious and intellectually dull Matt Walsh.
Elon Musk's personal promotion of Matt Walsh's follows Elon Musk's total capitulation to the far-right media company's personal complaints of being suppressed.
On Thursday (2023-06-01), Daily Wire co-founder and co-CEO Jeremy Boreing posted a Twitter thread explaining that Twitter reneged on a commitment to buy a package to host the showing of the entire 90-some-minute movie "What Is a Woman?" on a "dedicated event page, and to promote the event to every Twitter user over the first 10 hours" (something that has never been done in such a way for any kind of content).
According to Jeremy Boreing, after Twitter reviewed the film, they said they would not purchase the package and would limit the reach of the film ("What Is a Woman?"), calling it "hateful conduct" due to misgendering.
Twitter had removed "misgendering" from its safety policies, but the company told The Daily Wire they still consider it to be abuse and harassment.
After Jeremy Boreing and company personally appealed to Elon Musk, however, the tide turned.
"This was a mistake," Elon Musk said on Twitter.
"Whether or not you agree with using someone's preferred pronouns, not doing so is at most rude and certainly breaks no laws." Elon Musk went on to say he personally uses someone's preferred pronouns, just as he would someone's preferred names, for the sake of "good manners." "However," Elon Musk continued, "for the same reason, I object to rude behavior, ostracism or threats of violence if the wrong pronoun or name is used." Afterward, the prospects for "What Is a Woman?"'s exclusive treatment crystallized.
"Commenting & deliberate sharing will be allowed.
Sensitive content just won't be pushed to people unless they ask for it or a friend sends it to them," Elon Musk said Thursday night (2023-06-01), explaining that the post would not be recommended to people who don't follow The Daily Wire, nor would any advertising be associated with it.
Of course, this whole seemingly compromising, "measured" response blew up by Elon Musk's own hand, when Elon Musk told his 141.8 million followers that "every parent should watch" the documentary.
Which is to say, the content would be pushed to anyone who follows Elon Musk or even follows someone who follows him, even if they did not ask for it - explicitly contradicting Elon Musk's own statement (setting aside the irony of Elon Musk giving any parenting advice, given his own transgender daughter disowned him as a father after she turned 18).
What's more, though, is that the contradiction certainly did not seem accidental.
"The Streisand Effect on this will set an all-time record!" Elon Musk tweeted in response to a user encouraging people to watch the movie.
"The controversy will drive viewership," Elon Musk assured Jeremy Boreing after The Daily Wire's head complained about the "terrible day." Matt Walsh, for his part, called the final outcome of "Elon Musk himself tweeting out the film and urging people to watch it" a "huge win." Again, Elon Musk's decision-making did not have all interests in mind.
Also on Thursday (2023-06-01), Elon Musk tweeted that gender-affirming care "is a major problem" and that he will "be actively lobbying to criminalize" such care for people under the age of 18.
The episode comes after Elon Musk has been quick to heed requests from Turkey and India to suppress free speech; the common denominator being a complete lack of principle or standards and a pathetic subservience to power interests on the far right.
Elon Musk, who often pretends to be a moderate, is neither, in his politics nor in his role as Twitter CEO.
Again, even if Elon Musk was some universal free-speech maximalist, he wouldn't have to personally promote videos that only happen to punch down against transgender people.
Elon Musk could, for instance, be promoting content that confronts the corruption of fossil fuel or weapon companies, or Big Pharma, or Israel's treatment of Palestine.
Instead, it just coincidentally happens that the "free speech" Elon Musk advocates for is often language that attacks already marginalized people, and seldom challenges corporate interests that harm all of us.
Funny too Elon Musk, again, one of the world's biggest elites, thinks he is speaking truth to power.
Fellow delusionally self-proclaimed moderate Tim Pool proclaimed Friday (2023-06-02) that "Elon is facing the reality of going up against the world's political powers." "I am on team humanity," Elon Musk responded simply.
• (2023-06-02, https://newrepublic.com/post/173201/elon-Elon Musk-calls-imprison-therapists-helping-trans-kids) "Elon Musk Calls to Imprison Therapists Helping Trans Kids.
The Twitter CEO suggested throwing the medical professionals in jail, shortly after vowing to lobby for the criminalization of gender-affirming care." Elon Musk wants to criminalize gender-affirming care, and he supports imprisoning any therapists and medical professionals involved.
The Twitter CEO (Elon Musk) on Friday morning (2023-06-02) promoted a transphobic documentary produced by the petulant, vicious, and dull extremist commentator Matt Walsh.
"Every parent should watch this," said Elon Musk, the global elite, whose own daughter disowned him.
But that wasn't enough.
Amid Elon Musk's bowing down to the far-right mob - which Elon Musk so desperately wants to earn the approval of, Elon Musk Musk called gender-affirming care for people under the age of 18 "a major problem" that he (Elon Musk) will be "actively lobbying to criminalize." Far-right "thinker" Jordan Peterson hopped on to Elon Musk's tweet, adding his vision for what that regime would look like: "Prison.
Long term.
Without parole.
No mercy," he said, adding that he'd subject such policing to the therapists who support this medical care.
"Absolutely," Elon Musk responded.
This is how the CEO of Tesla (Elon Musk) - which used to celebrate Pride Month - is beginning it this time.
"Elon Musk's words are not an empty threat, as anti-trans bills, many criminalizing medical professionals, are sweeping across the nation in state legislatures everywhere." Reminder once again that the richest man in the world is not taking on the rich and powerful.
Elon Musk is not only doing the bidding of power-hungry governments, but welcoming and promoting content that punches down on some of the most marginalized among us.
• (2023-06-04, https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2023/06/hours-after-spacex-postponed-a-liftoff-elon-musk-boosted-a-transphobic-tweet/) "Hours After SpaceX Postponed a Liftoff, Elon Musk Boosted a Transphobic Tweet.
And it wasn't the first time this Pride month." Just hours after Elon Musk's space flight company - SpaceX - delayed the launch of a cargo capsule on Saturday morning (2023-06-03), the billionaire (Elon Musk) launched something else: a needlessly bad tweet.
At 2:17 am Eastern on Saturday (2023-06-03), SpaceX announced on Twitter it had delayed the launch of its CRS-28 mission - which aims to carry supplies from Florida to the International Space Station - citing weather concerns and "vehicle preparations." The new launch is set for Monday (2023-06-05).
A little over five hours later, the company's founder and CEO Elon Musk weighed in on a controversy involving a transgender student using the girls' locker room at a Vermont high school.
In response to a tweet from Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer who has advocated against allowing trans students to compete in women's sports, Elon Musk voiced support for a Vermont high school student who was reportedly disciplined after trying to prevent a fellow student - who is trans - from using the girls' locker room.
(Riley Gaines' tweet misgenders the trans student.) Referring to the incident, Elon Musk replied to Riley Gaines, "incredibly unjust." As Fox News noted, it's not the first time this week (2023-06) - which, notably, marked the beginning of Pride Month - that Elon Musk felt the need to opine on trans rights.
After Twitter blocked the premiere of the Daily Wire's transphobic documentary, "What Is a Woman?," Elon Musk called it a "mistake." "This was a mistake by many people at Twitter," Elon Musk said.
"It is definitely allowed." Anyway, despite Elon Musk's unfortunate views, the SpaceX cargo capsule launch is actually pretty cool.
In addition to bringing food and other provisions for the ISS, it'll also carry with it several new experiments, including one from North Carolina high school student Pristine Onohua, which investigates how space may alter our genes.
Beginning 20 minutes before liftoff at 11:47 a.m.
Eastern on Monday (2023-06-05), you can watch a live stream here.

Musk announced that going forward, "the words 'cis' or 'cisgender' are considered slurs on this platform," and that repeated use of the terms would lead to temporary suspensions at a minimum.
For the purposes of removing all doubt: "Cisgender" is not, by any commonly understood definition of the word, a slur.
It's a term adopted by the medical community to describe someone who aligns with their biological sex and gender from both ("cis" is a Latin prefix meaning "this side"), as opposed to transgender people, who do not.
In a clinical sense, the word "cisgender" is a way for medical practitioners to differentiate between a transgender patient and someone who identifies as their birth sex or gender without having to label them as "normal" or a control group. ...
