Misinformation is the attempt to mislead. Example: you have a university degree, but state that you have a Grade 12 education (true, but the expectation upon hearing this is that is your ultimate formal academic completion). while the facts are true, the presentation of those facts is an attempt to mislead or misdirect your understanding of the topic under discussion.
Disinformation. Continuing that example, if you have a Grade 12 education - and have never attained an advanced degree (Masters | Doctorate) - then claiming that you hold a Ph.D (doctoral degree) is a lie: disinformation.

Leader of U.S. pandemic response says, "I don't understand what is going on in society." | Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is the chief medical adviser to the U.S. president, says the world is in the 'worst possible environment' for a global pandemic. Despite the fact that more than 730,000 Americans have died of COVID-19, the U.S. has a comparatively low vaccination rate - only about 57 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated. Dr. Anthony Fauci believes that misinformation has had a major role to play in that. ...

In the run-up to the 2020 election, the most highly contested in US history, Facebook's most popular pages for Christian and Black American content were being run by Eastern European troll farms. These pages were part of a larger network that collectively reached nearly half of all Americans, according to an internal company report, and achieved that reach not through user choice but primarily as a result of Facebook's own platform design and engagement-hungry algorithm. ... | Hacker News: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28565121

[NYTimes.com, 2021-07-25] Disinformation for Hire, a Shadow Industry, Is Quietly Booming. Back-alley firms meddle in elections and promote falsehoods on behalf of clients who can claim deniability, escalating our era of unreality. | Hacker News
In May 2021, several French and German social media influencers received a strange proposal. A London-based public relations agency wanted to pay them to promote messages on behalf of a client. A polished three-page document detailed what to say and on which platforms to say it.
But it asked the influencers to push not beauty products or vacation packages, as is typical, but falsehoods tarring Pfizer-BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine. Stranger still, the agency, Fazze, claimed a London address where there is no evidence any such company exists. Some recipients posted screenshots of the offer. Exposed, Fazze scrubbed its social media accounts. That same week, Brazilian and Indian influencers posted videos echoing Fazze's script to hundreds of thousands of viewers.
The scheme appears to be part of a secretive industry that security analysts and American officials say is exploding in scale: disinformation for hire. Private firms, straddling traditional marketing and the shadow world of geopolitical influence operations, are selling services once conducted principally by intelligence agencies. They sow discord, meddle in elections, seed false narratives and push viral conspiracies, mostly on social media. And they offer clients something precious: deniability.
"Disinfo-for-hire actors being employed by government or government-adjacent actors is growing and serious," said Graham Brookie, director of the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab, calling it "a boom industry."
